The metro areas included in this menu have at least one facility that reported to TRI. They consist of one or more socially and economically integrated adjacent counties, cities, or towns.

The 22 watersheds included in this menu are based on hydrologic regions defined by the U.S. Geological Survey, and contain multiple small watersheds and water resources within a large geographic area.

The tribal lands included in this search menu are federally recognized tribes with at least one TRI facility located within its boundaries, or within 10 miles of its boundaries.

A "release" refers to different ways that toxic chemicals from industrial facilities enter the air, water and land. Releases include spilling, leaking, pumping, pouring, emitting, emptying, discharging, injecting, escaping, leaching, dumping, or disposing into the environment.

Facilities report how much of each chemical is recycled, burned for energy recovery, and treated, as well as how much is disposed of or otherwise released during normal production; these are all waste management methods. Facilities also report the quantity of chemicals emitted in the event of a one-time incident, such as a spill or fire; these are also included in “waste management."

Source reduction refers to how facilities reduce the amount of chemical waste they produce or how they avoid producing it in the first place. Facilities are required to report any new source reduction activities each year by selecting codes on the TRI reporting form that correspond to five different categories, which are listed under the "Trend by Method and Year" tab below (view more details in Reporting Forms and Instructions).

To evaluate the potential harm of TRI chemicals released into the environment numerous factors must be considered. EPA's Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI), a screening-level tool that uses TRI data along with other information, produces results that provide context and enable relative comparisons of potential health-related impacts from reported toxic chemical waste management activities. RSEI Hazard, also called toxicity-weighted pounds, is a descriptor of relative potential harm to human health and consists of the pounds of a chemical released to the environment or transferred off site multiplied by the chemical's toxicity weight.

The graph below shows the trend in total RSEI Hazard by kind of release for your current selection. A higher total hazard for a year indicates a higher relative potential hazard to human health. Looking at changes in RSEI Hazard across years can help illustrate changes in relative potential hazard over time.

Data on facility compliance with federal environmental laws are maintained in EPA's Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO).

Use the Reset Zoom icon to return to the zoom level of your selected search results if the map display needs to be corrected.

Use the Distance Selection feature available in the "Address" or "Current Location" search options to change the default search 10-mile radius to any distance between 1 and 100 miles.

Use the lasso tool to draw a line around the facilities you want included in your search results. To use the tool, click anywhere on the map, then click on the lasso icon and draw a line around the desired facilities. Lastly, use the checkmark to confirm your selection.

If you use the "Address" search option, the default view will display the location of TRI facilities within a 10-mile radius of the central location point of your search result.

TRI facility locations are based on records from EPA's Facility Registry Services (FRS). Get more information on FRS.

marks facilities that did not report to TRI but have permits or requirements under EPA's air, water, or hazardous waste programs and are expected to produce, release, or manage TRI-reportable chemicals. These facilities include:

Clean Air Act (CAA)-regulated facilities that release at least 20,000 pounds of a single hazardous air pollutant (HAP) or 50,000 pounds of multiple HAPs. (Most HAPs are TRI-reportable chemicals.)

Clean Water Air (CWA)-regulated facilities that discharge more than 25,000 gallons of wastewater per day containing at least one TRI-reportable chemical.

Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)-regulated facilities that generate or handle at least 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste within a month. (These wastes commonly contain TRI-reportable chemicals.)

U.S. Census data tell you about certain characteristics of the people who live near the facilities in your search area. In the map shown here, locations of TRI facilities are shown on top of Census block groups. The data provided in this section are derived from U.S. Census data. It includes data at the Census block group level, which is usually based on a range of 600-3,000 people living in it. Multiple block groups make up a Census tract, and multiple Census tracts make up a county.

The map displays population statistics from seven different U.S. Census data indicators. Individual indicator descriptions are noted below.
• Population Density: the number of individuals in a block group per square mile.
• Low Income: the percent of a block group's population in households where the household income is less than or equal to twice the federal "poverty level."
• Unemployment Rate: the percent of a block group's population that did not have a job at all during the reporting period, made at least one specific active effort to find a job during the prior 4 weeks, and were available for work (unless temporarily ill).
• Less Than High School Education: the percent of people age 25 or older in a block group whose education is short of a high school diploma.
• Limited English Speaking: the percent of people in a block group living in linguistically isolated households. A household in which all members age 14 years and over speak a non-English language and also speak English less than "very well" (have difficulty with English) is linguistically isolated.
• Under Age 5: the percent of people in a block group under the age of 5.
• Over Age 64: the percent of people in a block group over the age of 64.

You can search by address, state, facility name, metro area, watershed, or Tribal land using the tabs on the launch screen. After making your selections, click View Search Results

Address: Enter an address to find TRI facilities within 10 miles of the location. If there are no TRI facilities within the default search radius of 10 miles, you can use the distance input box to expand the search radius to up to 100 miles from the address you entered.
- You can also select to find facilities near your current location, if your device's privacy settings allow.
State: Select a state, and then narrow your search (county, city, or ZIP code) using the second row of options.
Facility: To find a specific TRI facility, begin typing the facility name or TRI Facility ID (TRIFID).
Metro Area: Find TRI facilities within a designated Metropolitan/Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as defined by the Office of Management and Budget. MSAs consist of one or more socially and economically integrated adjacent counties, cities, or towns.
Watershed: Find TRI facilities based on the boundaries of hydrologic regions, as defined by the U.S. Geological Survey. Hydrologic regions contain multiple small watersheds and water resources within a large geographic area.
Tribe: Choose the name of a Tribe to find TRI facilities located on or within 10 miles of that Tribe's lands.

Releases: A "release" refers to different ways that toxic chemicals from industrial facilities enter the air, water and land. Releases include spilling, leaking, pumping, pouring, emitting, emptying, discharging, injecting, escaping, leaching, dumping, or disposing into the environment.

On-Site vs. Off-Site Releases: On-site disposal or other releases include the sum of air emissions, surface water discharges, and land disposal at the site of the TRI reporting facility. The term off-site refers to the transfer of chemical-containing waste to a facility that is geographically or physically separate from the TRI reporting facility, for recycling, energy recovery, treatment or disposal. Off-site disposal sites include landfills, surface impoundments, and underground injection at a receiving facility.

Waste Managed: The sum of all non-accidental chemical waste generated at a facility, including on-site releases, on-site waste management (recycling, treatment, and combustion for energy recovery), and off-site transfers for disposal, treatment, recycling, or energy recovery.

Pollution Prevention: Pollution prevention (also referred to as source reduction) includes activities undertaken by TRI-reporting industrial and federal facilities that eliminate or reduce the use of TRI-listed chemicals and the generation of chemical waste. Potential Health Effects: Whether or to what extent a person experiences adverse health effects from exposure to one or more chemicals depends on many factors, including the toxicity of the chemical, how its dispersed in the environment, and the timing and duration of a person's exposure.

Compliance and Enforcement: EPA compliance and enforcement information derived from EPA's Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) tool.

Toxics Release Inventory (TRI): Search results are based on the most recent TRI data available, which cover reporting years 2015 through 2024. EPA last updated these data in November 2025 (additional information on the TRI Program).

Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI): RSEI data are based on TRI data from 2015 to 2024, as well as toxicity data updated in March 2024 from RSEI version 2.3.12 (additional information on RSEI data and modeling).

Health Effects: Toxicity data for TRI chemicals are maintained in the TRI-Chemical Hazard Information Profiles (TRI-CHIP), which includes information about potential health effects for each TRI chemical (additional information on TRI-CHIP).

Compliance and Enforcement: Compliance and enforcement data for air emissions, surface water discharges, and hazardous waste are reported to EPA through various programs and maintained in the Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) web pages (additional information on ECHO data).

Census Data: Population statistics for seven different indicators are pulled from U.S. Census data.

Facility Locations: TRI facility locations are based on records contained in EPA's Facility Registry Services (FRS) (additional information on FRS).

Address/Location: If you enter an address/location, the map shows a coordinate (latitude/longitude) using Esri's World Geocoding Service (additional information on geocoding) EXIT.

All of the charts, maps, and tables in TRI Toxics Tracker are interactive. Examples of how to use their features are described below.

Charts: Hover over a pie chart and use the scroll wheel to spin the pie chart and see data labels that may be cut off in the default view. Hover over pie chart slices and bar chart segments to see more detailed data.

Tables: To change the sorting order in a table, click on the column header of your choice. For individual facility information, click on a facility name and then the checkmark button.

Map Lasso Tool: Use the lasso tool to draw a ring around the facilities you wish to view together. To use the tool, click on the map and click on the lasso icon. Then draw a line around all the facilities you wish to view and use the checkmark to confirm your selection.

Back Button: Use this button to go back one step in your selection history to view a different facility or group of facilities, or a different search result option, other than what you initially selected.

Forward Button: Use this button to go forward one step in your selection history to view a different facility or group of facilities, or a different search result option, other than what you initially selected.

These buttons will work for any of the left-menu sections and tabs within the current menu section. Your selection history includes any facilities selected, as well as the various search result options, such as:

Dot size radio buttons on the maps,
U.S. Census data indicator radio buttons,
Distance selection,
Toggle button to show or hide other EPA-regulated facilities, and
Release media buttons for releases charts.
